What is the difference between the term BASED on a true story and the term INSPIRED by a true story?

I've always wondered.What is the difference between the term BASED on a true story and the term INSPIRED by a true story?
There really isn't any.What is the difference between the term BASED on a true story and the term INSPIRED by a true story?
inspired means like something happend and it lead someone to make up a whole other series of events from that 1 idea





based means the outline of the whole story is somewhat true just the minor details are different
Based on a true story means that the events in the film are roughly parallel to the events in real life.





Inspired by a true story means someone heard a story, and it inspired them to make a movie about (usually) something similar, or, as a friend in film school put it ';Saying 'inspired by a true story' doesn't mean anything. Like, what if I heard this story about football, and it inspired me to make a movie about a mutant killer alligator? How is that relevant at all?';
