I have not seen decent statistics on the reliability of laptop brands so there's no good reason to say that any one brand is any better or worse than the others (that doesn't stop people from claiming such things though, haven't seen any of them show a good reason for believing what they say though, I doubt *they* have anything to actually back up their claim).
Of course all companies make bad models every so often so it's a good idea to search the net to find out what people are saying about the models you're looking at getting, a couple of negative comments probably aren't too much to worry about but if almost everyone is saying it's a piece of s*** that falls apart then that's a model to avoid.
I also doubt there's much difference in terms of failure rate of desktop motherboards (at least as long as you stay within the specs which some people seem unable to do so) but haven't seen any statistics on the matter (they're all taking care to use good quality capacitors now).
