Who was the first (in music terms) true ';Pop Star'; and why?

ELVIS! and still is how many of todays'; pop stars'; music will still be popular in 20-30 years time.Who was the first (in music terms) true ';Pop Star'; and why?
What is the definition of a pop star? Frank Sinatra was the first to be screamed at by fans and yes, he was young once.. I believe his manager paid the girls to do it.Who was the first (in music terms) true ';Pop Star'; and why?
Probably Elvis Presely. He was adored by everyone. Men wanted to be him, women wanted to be with him. He ws good looking and could really sing. He also acted too.
mAN i AM NOT REALLY SURE BUT I AM GOING TO HAVE TO SAY.. miCHael JacksON.
Spice Girls or something....
depends exactly what you mean. you could argue someone like bill haley (who pre-dated elvis) would fit the bill, but as someone rightly pointed out louis armstrong ticks all the boxes, as do many other jazz artistes.

but if by 'pop' you mean what is popular at any given time then i'd have to go for mozart who pre-dates them all.
Micheal Jackson when he was in his early 20's
I'd have to say Cher.

Why?

1. She started in the 60s.

2. She's still around.

3. She worked as a duo and solo.

4. She influenced not only music, but fashion and television as well.

5. Also has/had a film career (winning a Golden Globe).

6. Uses her fame to help with charities worldwide.

and most important of all...

7. Has seen both success and failure, happiness and tragedy, but keeps on following her dreams, never giving in.

Can't really say all that about Mr. Jackson now can we.

edit** Sorry I like the Wiki... for all...check the link... its a good start but by no means covers everyone. ';What is Pop?'; is a tough question.
Elvis PRESLEY HANDS DOWN .JOHN LENNON SAID ';BEFORE ELVIS THERE WAS NOTHING';

ELVIS IS THE PIONEER OF THE MUSIC WORLD HE WAS THE FIRST TO DO EVERYTHING N EVERY BODY AFTER HIM IS A COPY. GREATEST SINGER N ENTERTAINER EVER!!!!

PEACE
Michael Parkinson has just answered this very question on TV.

The answer is Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong, who not only invented pop music, but changed the way people sing.

He was the first 'people's singer' [from a poor/normal background].
